September Book: Saffy's Angel

Our first book selection for the new school year is Saffy's Angel by Hilary McKay:

The four Casson children, whose mother, Eve, is a fine-arts painter, have all been given the names of paint colors. Cadmium (Caddy), is the eldest; then Saffron (Saffy); Indigo, the only boy; and Rose, the youngest. When Saffy discovers quite by accident that she has been adopted, she is deeply upset, though the others assure her that it makes no difference at all. Saffy is the daughter of Eve's twin sister, who lived in Siena, Italy, and died in a car crash. Grandad brough Saffy, as a very small child, back from Siena.

At Grandad's death he leaves something to each of the children. To Saffy, it is "her angel," although no one knows its identity. How Saffy discovers what her angel is, with the help of an energetic new friend, lies at the heart of this enchanting story.

Book Buddies is Back!

Hello! I am very pleased to let you know that the Book Buddies Book Club is back! The book club is for children is grades 3, 4 and 5 and the meetings will be held again this year on Mondays, from 3:30pm - 4:30pm in the Children's Program Room. Meetings will consist of a book discussion, snack and related activity. Hopefully we will be as lucky as last year and have the chance to speak with a few authors! We'll have to see as the year goes on...

Here are the Fall dates:

September 22
October 27
November 17
December 22

I'm so excited to be back that I've decided we should just jump in and discuss our first book at the first meeting on the 22nd. I don't want to waste any time! Our first book is going to be Saffy's Angel by Hilary McKay. I'm very excited about this one. I've never read Hilary McKay before and she is supposed to be fantastic. I think we're really going to enjoy it and have lots to discuss. Copies of the book are available at the Children's Reference Desk so feel free to come in at any time and pick one up!

I'm asking that everyone interested in joining the book club register this year, even if you were in it last year. It helps me to anticipate how many people will be coming each month so that I make sure to have enough snacks and supplies. You can register by calling the Children's Department at 847-8720 ext. 204, visiting the Children's Desk or by emailing me at cantonio@newportlibraryri.org.

I can't wait to see you all on September 22nd. Happy reading and good luck with the first day of school!
